Tata Photon in Ubuntu 12.04

Posted: August 29, 2012 in Technology

In continuation to my previous post where I explained how to establish internet connection using Tata Photon in Ubuntu 12.04, here I will explain how to install the Tata Photon GUI in Ubuntu 12.04. By default, Ubuntu 12.04 does not show the mass storage tata photon device as an storage device where all the installables are present but the entry is present there in /dev directory. You just need to look for it.
Goto /dev/disk/by-id/ by

cd /dev/disk/by-id
ls
look for something similar to usb-HUAWEI_Mass_Storage_ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ-0:0
mount this device on a mount path
mount usb-HUAWEI_Mass_Storage_ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ-0\:0 /mnt
cd /mnt
sh ./install_linux

as soon as the installation is done, you can Tata Photon GUI will come and you can continue browsing as you used to do before.
p.s. : if your device does not establish the connection for the first time, try removing the device and reconnect it. then try again to connect to internet.

I tried Ubuntu 12.04, but it worked very badly, so I had to reinstall Ubuntu 11.10… Did you guys have any problems with Ubuntu 12.04? I think it is the worst release of Ubuntu ever… Maybe it’s because of laptop, and desktop users does not experience such problems…

it says you cannot mount, only root’s allowed to do that

    • Kapil Jain says:

Yes all the system operations like software install, mount etc. requires super user permissions. Become a super user by issuing following command
      sudo su
Now if you execute all above commands, it will work fine

  5. shivam says:

there is no file like usb-HUAWEI_Mass_Storage_ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ-0:0 under ls command.

  7. Pranav says:

I am trying to install Tata Photon Plus (Huawei EC156) on Ubuntu 12.04(Precise Pangolin). When I try to mount the usb-HUAWEI_Mass_Storage* file, I get the following error:

    root@pranavpc:/dev/disk/by-id# mount usb-HUAWEI_Mass_Storage_ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ-0\:0
    mount: can’t find usb-HUAWEI_Mass_Storage_ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ-0:0 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

    root@pranavpc:/dev/disk/by-id#

What must I do in this situation?

  8. I have also faced problem while installing , i have also made a video on this , you can check it out here

    thanks

  9. Sreemesh says:

    Hai,
when I run install_linux script its asking for thr absolute path for install [/usr/local/Photon_Plus] .What will I input?…Plzzz reply me as soon as possible.

  10. aditya menon says:

That worked! I did not know about devices being listed in /dev/disk/by-id/, it did not work when I tried to mount /dev/sdb, so I was frustrated 🙂

Thanks for the tip! Here’s the thing though, only browser based connections seem to work on the Photon in Linux, for example I go offline on Skype. The “dialer” thing just connects to the internet but does not seem to update the OS with this status. Any ideas on how to fix that?

    • Kapil Jain says:

Last i used photon, my desktop applications were working fine. Did you try to ping google from cli? Have you setup proxy earlier for you OS env which you may need to clear now to use photon for desktop apps.
